Poetry Types
Haiku = Must be 3 lines long. 1st line = 5 syllables 2nd line = 7 syllables 3rd line = 5 syllables Cinquain = Must be 5 lines long 1st line = 2 syllables 2nd line = 4 syllables 3rd line = 6 syllables 4th line = 8 syllables 5th line = 2 syllables Cinquains don’t need to rhyme but you can include rhyme. Free Verse = No rules Expresses emotion Not structured May or may not rhyme Nonet = Must be 9 lines. 1st line: 9 syllables 2nd line: 8 syllables 3rd line: 7 syllables 4th line: 6 syllables 5th line: 5 syllables 6th line: 4 syllables 7th line: 3 syllables 8th line: 2 syllables 9th line: 1 syllables |
Poetry Techniques
Rhyme: 1. End Rhyme= When a word at the end of two sentences rhyme. 2. Internal Rhyme= When words in the middle of two sentences rhyme. 3. Assonance= When two words have the same vowel sound. Example: I can be very cool = End Rhyme I am also a huge tool. I got a huge tear in my pants = Internal Rhyme I guess I cant wear them again love my baby girl = Assonance She is my whole world Personification: An inanimate object is given human like characteristics. Example: - The trees danced in the wind. - The rain slapped me in the face. - The oak tree wore the nest like a ribbon in her hair. Alliteration: Beginning of words that sound the same Example: Skin sizzled in the sun. Metaphor: Compares two unlike things using the words 'is' or 'was'. Example: He is very angry = He is a grizzly bear Simile: Comparison of two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'. Example: I am as tired as a sloth. Onomatopoeia: Sounds like the word Example: Snapped, crackled and popped. Repetition: Repeating of words or phrases. Example: Because of you I can love Because of you I can feel... |
